Project Background

Advanced telecommunications is a key economic development and civic infrastructure for the future. Portland is competing at the global level to attract and retain businesses and having the right infrastructure increasingly means digital, ubiquitous and unwired.

It also plays a key role in building an informed and educated citizenry by giving residents access to key government, community and business services.

In 2005-06 the City of Portland, Portland Public Schools (PPS) and TriMet are collaborating through to sponsor the development of a Citywide wireless network (Unwire Portland) to promote economic and public benefits for community, business and government use.
