PDC issues 2009 Sustainability Report

The 2009 Sustainability in Urban, Community and Economic Development report issued by the Portland Development Commission (PDC) is now available for review. Instead of issuing hundreds of printed copies of the report, individuals are encouraged to view an electronic version, which is posted on the PDC’s website at www.pdc.us/sustainability. This is a small but real-world example of the PDC’s efforts to protect the earth’s natural systems, help create a green economy and develop a more equitable community.

Learning to live sustainably is one of the great imperatives of this century. The PDC report highlights the ways in which we are expanding our sustainable urban environment by investing in green commercial and affordable housing developments, transit lines, green streets and green jobs. Last year, all nine of the completed residential and commercial projects PDC contributed to achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification, the world’s defacto standard for certifying buildings. Over the previous four years, only seven projects achieved LEED certification.

“In Portland, we are learning from nature, which is the best teacher, for creating a more sustainable world,” said Cindy Bethell, PDC Sustainability Manager.

PDC was created by Portland voters in 1958 to serve as the city’s urban renewal agency as laid out in Chapter 15 of the City’s Charter. PDC provides comprehensive housing, development and economic development programs within the Portland region.
